Edge Diffusion during Growth: The Kink Ehrlich-Schwoebel Effect and Resulting Instabilities
نویسندگان
چکیده
The morphology of surfaces of arbitrary orientation in the presence of step and kink EhrlichSchwoebel effects (SESE and KESE) during growth is studied within the framework of a model in which steps are continuous lines, and is illustrated by a simple solid-on-solid model. For vicinal surfaces KESE induces an instability often stronger than that from SESE. The possibility of stable kink flow growth is analyzed. Fluctuations can shift the stability threshold. KESE also induces mound formation. [S0031-9007(99)09023-7]

Instability and wavelength selection during step flow growth of metal surfaces vicinal to fcc(001).
We study the onset and development of ledge instabilities during growth of vicinal metal surfaces using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We observe the formation of periodic patterns at [110] close packed step edges on surfaces vicinal to fcc(001) under realistic molecular beam epitaxy conditions. The corresponding wavelength and its temperature dependence are studied in detail. Simulations sug...
متن کاملLinear stability analysis for step meandering instabilities with elastic interactions and Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers.
Vicinal surfaces are known to exhibit morphological instabilities during step-flow growth. Through a linear stability analysis of step meandering instabilities, we investigate two effects that are important in many heteroepitaxial systems: elastic monopole-monopole interactions arising from bulk stress and the Ehrlich-Schwoebel (ES) barriers due to the asymmetric adatom incorporation rates. The...
متن کاملA Simple Solid-on-solid Model of Epitaxial Films Growth: Surface Roughness and Dynamics
The random deposition model must be enriched to reflect the variety of surface roughness due to some material characteristics of the film growing by vacuum deposition or sputtering. The essence of the computer simulation in this case is to account for possible surface migration of atoms just after the deposition, in connection with binding energy between atoms (as the mechanism provoking the di...
متن کاملEffect of local environment on nanoscale dynamics at electrochemical interfaces: anisotropic growth and dissolution in the presence of a step providing evidence for a schwoebel-ehrlich barrier at solid/liquid interfaces.
The dynamics of nanoscale islands in the vicinity of a monoatomic step on a metal electrode surface under potential control have been investigated by potential pulse perturbation time-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (P3 TR-STM). As the metastable islands decay, a clear anisotropy develops in the spatial distribution of islands, relative to the monoatomic step. Islands appear to be stabil...
متن کاملO ct 1 99 7 Single - Particle Diffusion - Coefficient on Surfaces with Ehrlich - Schwoebel - Barriers
The diffusion coefficient of single particles in the presence of Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers (ESB)is considered. An exact expression is given for the diffusion coefficient on linear chains with random arrangements of ESB. The results are extended to surfaces having ESB with uniform extension in one or both directions. All results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.
